Investment Advice Needed
Here's a question, and not a disinterested one either. Is this old piece of crap

worth $1,200 (American) if it starts, runs, has current license plates, decent tires and all that? Seems a bit high....but then I last looked at them when oil was under $50. Just for reference, this other one, totally original, clean and shiny....

is selling for $10,000!
Please say it's a good deal, because I just drove it home and parked it in the back 40.

Is that German, American or Mexican made?
I think it influences the price a bit. Yours looks Mexican.
Cheapest I could find here in The Netherlands was this 1978 beetle for € 750. Which translates to $ 1,188.97

So, yeah, not bad.

Mine's German, I think. I also think the beetle wasn't sold in the US as late as '78. We don't get Mexican Beetles here except by bootleg (only Mexican nationals may drive them over the border for work---but a few get sold once here). That's a good looking red bug for the price! There is an uptrend in the price here....millions have been retired to the scrapyard or hacked up for buggies.

For a German beetle it seems a good price. Plus it looks like a later model so it is bound to run well. German quality and all that. And if you feel really in the mood for something different, the beetle can be fitted with a 911 engine. A friend of mine used to build those for a living. Usually his customers wanted something fancy with wide tyres and lots of chrome but he had a very plain one. Great to surprise GTI's and other sport cars at the traffic light.
The red one isn't road legal yet, though, still needs it's paperwork. No idea what that would cost but it still seems a good deal.
The beetle has gotten yuppie status here as well, along with the Volvo Amazon, the Citroen 2CV and the Fiat 500.
Which, in the spirit of things, has been re-released (is that what you call it with a car?) and looks quite nice.

Yeah for 1200 seems hideous but this is 2008 and gas is how much, and it drives, so... why not?
It looks a late model, my father had a BRG 1302 (I think) a 1500, and the windscreen isn't flat and it's got the late model bumpers. (do you guys know what a bumper is? )
I once bought a Kombi for $50. It came with 2 motors, both in the cabin :-). The older lasted 2000m before it blew, I rebuilt the other and it ran til I sold it, 250 ! That was before I learnt to bleed brakes, consequently they didn't.. much...

I know; I bought one for my daughter for $500, but that was 15 years ago. I drove it to the store today. Goes, stops, and everything! Wish I had your Kombi.
We have bumpers in America. In the front and back. For bumping. So, later I'll crawl under the front end and see what horrible VW gremlin is making it wobble, but I think it's one of those typical things. Ball joints or steering damper or tie rod ends or one of those buzzwords.
